Any car chases or crashes?

Not really. We see the aftermaths of several crashes and there's a short scene of some police cars, fire trucks and army vehicles (troop carriers and Humvees mostly) making great haste at the beginning but although the pacing of these scenes is very frantic (to show the authorities scrambling to deal with the at-the-time unknown problem) I wouldn't call it a chase.

The ending was brilliant, IMO.

The ending is very sad. It made me kind of upset, actually. It was a good twist in terms of plot, but I personally hated it:
Spoiler - click here to see it
He kills everyone and less than two minutes later a large Army convoy rolls past and they would have all been saved.

Sorry, I didn't even realize it. I guess I just assumed everyone had seen it. And plus I don't know how to do the "Spoiler" thing. :/

There are a lot of small quaint stereotypical New England towns there. It makes it the perfect setting for a horror story.
