Un film ayant comme toile de fond — et en partie comme sujet — la décolonisation anglaise en Afrique noire, mais tourné en Angleterre.

C'est théâtral et bourré de défauts (la musique, comme souvent, et ici presque constamment, ne nous épargne aucun cliché sonore ; les allées et venues sont réglées comme pour la scène ; le couple Farrow-Leyton ne sert à rien qu'à la touche de glamour inutile) mais pas exempt de qualités, dont l'interprétation, cabotine mais c'est voulu, de Richard Attenborough, et les scènes d'action très bien dirigées et photographiées. Bref, ça fait mieux que se laisser voir.

Graham Stark, John Leyton, Percy Herbert, Mia Farrow, Richard Attenborough, they're almost all there.

Jack Hawkins, Flora Robson, Cecil Parker, Errol John, Earl Cameron and John Meillon are excused.

Interesting drama with British withdrawal from Africa as, er…, toile de fond. Classic —classy and intentionally over-the-top when needed— interpretation by very good British players. Plus Mia Farrow.

CinemaScope, Pinewood Studios and outdoor scenes done on Salisbury Plain.
