 IMDB usually uses the release date, maybe the finished the movie in end of 1958 but released it in beginning 1959... or IMDB just made a mistake

 Some movies waited a long time for the premiere. Example http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0082952/ - this movie is actually from 1972. Or Soviet movie "Komissar" which was released after 20 years ;) , but in this case IMDb has correct year (1967 not 1988). So it is always better to check years if it's possible.
