I love this movie as I live very close to the actual Route 66. When you see Mack driving towards California near the beginning of the movie, you can see fields of corn and a grain elevator in one shot, and that's exactly what it looks like around here. :)

I take the route every day on my way to school, and the scenery is great except for the 4 lane interstate built right next to it. Just like the movie portrayed, there's few run-down gas stations and abandoned roadside restaurants along the route. And of course, they went out of business soon after the arrival of the interstate system.

A 1987 Blue FJ60 Toyota Land Cruiser to play the rugged, outdoor, loner character. A 1979 International Harvester Scout II to play the adventurous and seductive female. A Black 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback to play the dangerous hero. A 1985 S-Class Turbo Diesel Mercedes to play the wise older character. A Volkswagen Karmann Ghia for the shy but mysteriously beautiful female. A Jeep Grand Cherokee (any year would work) to play the frat guy (who would later explode). A Jeep Liberty to play the sorority girl (also explodes). A 1989 Mitsubishi Pajero for the mercenary or insurgent. A 1991 BMW 850I 12-Cylinder for the suave daredevil (similar character to Fastback). A 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe to play the mob boss. A Jeep Grand Wagoneer for the surfer dude.

I LOVE this movie. Anyone who is into NASCAR, regardless of age, will get a kick out of this movie. NASCAR and other auto racing league drivers and personalities did voices for this movie. Dale E., Jr. had a cameo as 'junior'... I think the number 8 car. This was before his seperation from DEI. Jay Leno did Jay Limo. Jay is a HUGE automobile fan and collector. Bob Costas and Darryll Waltrip as Bob Cutlass and Daryl Cartrip. "The King" was voiced by Richard Petty, universally known in the auto racing world as 'The King'. "Mrs. The King" was voiced by Petty's wife. Her vehicle was a station wagon she said she drove to follow Richard from track to track in the old days... Yes, with kids in tow. Even Click and Clak the Tappett (Magliozzi) brothers did voices. Check out IMDB for a complete list of characters and their Auto world voices.

Did anyone else notice the 'marbles' on the movie's track? You know those bits and balls of rubber that scrub off tires that accumulate near the wall? Hysterical!

When "The King" wipes out... I think this footage was a cartoon rendering of an actual spectacular wipe-out that Petty had when he drove that STP Blue Roadrunner. In this movie it almost looked like real NASCAR archive footage.

Some interesting information on early/scrapped development:

Here's some early concept art of characters, drawn by Dave "Big" Deal in 2000, when work on Cars started. 98% of the characters all have makeshift mouths.
Sally (interestingly, she's a 993 rather than a 996) http://www.bigdealart.com/images/SampleFiles/Sally1.jpg
Lizzie (originally named Henry F. Ord, she's a Centerdoor Sedan rather than a Doctor's Coupe) http://www.bigdealart.com/images/SampleFiles/Lizzie.jpg
Sarge and Fillmore, both of which were originally going to be antagonists and Fillmore was originally going to be named Waldmire: http://www.bigdealart.com/images/SampleFiles/Sarge.jpg
Luigi: http://www.bigdealart.com/images/SampleFiles/LUIGI.jpg
Mater: http://www.bigdealart.com/images/SampleFiles/MATER.jpg

As evident by a 2001 concept sketch, they were originally going to make Doc a Packard Clipper, as Mr. Windshield, who was scrapped from the storyline around 2003. McQueen's number was also going to be 57, but it was changed to 95 around 2004/05, when production finished.

I really, really loved, correction STILL LOVE, this movie... the way the animators brought to life the heyday of the towns on R66. 'People drove on it not to make time, but to have a good time'. Such a shame those days are pretty much consigned to history. Plus I like Flo's V8 cafe where the gas station is made from pistons and cylinder head cover. Never noticed the detailing of that before. trainboy wrote The Best Animation Movie from 2006!

Just because it's Cars? I remember seeing it when it came out, and in hindsight it was pretty average. I can't even remember a lot, though that might be because it was only the second movie I saw in theaters. Frank chasing McQueen in the field terrified me though.
Not to mention Happy Feet won the Oscar for best picture in 2007, which I cannot understand at all. That film was incredibly stupid, though stupendously animated.

The Wild was underrated as all hell, and it got a lot of flak for being a "Madagascar ripoff" (see my review on the IMCDb page) Over the Hedge and Open Season were pretty top tier, though it took me 16 years to watch OtH myself. Beforehand I sneaked it when my dad watched it on a plane (I was left with Lilo and Stitch)

Monster House was also advertised all over that summer, though at 6 and a half I was still too scared to watch it. Barnyard was just...I remember seeing the posters and being like: "this is complete caffeine-high junk."

I saw that last year. Apparently this is what I thought of it:

"One of the strangest films I have ever seen. [...] Only after a quarter of an hour do the characters start talking, and the dinosaurs take another fifteen minutes. A very rare moment for Disney where almost no jokes are made, and if there are, they are not of the dumb slapstick kind we are used to from the House of Mouse. Dialogue in this movie is very few: within 82 minutes, the characters say about 350-400 words, and the rest is dinosaur noises.[...]"

It's only my opinion ;)
