Robert Siodmak made it while in his French period, from 1933 to 1940, after leaving Germany an before going to the USA.

With Harry Baur, Albert Préjean and Gabrielle Dorziat, I think this film is a stand-out. Yes, there is only one catchable car for us but nevertheless, c'est un grand film, aventures et tragédie, action thriller and drama, there is all in it.

The cars… Apart the one I posted, we found many assembled on the grand' place de Dunkerque (s'appelle-t-elle Place Jean Bart ?)

… and it's a pity, for the cinematography is superb. But the cars are so far, so small…

Since you've been patient enough to read me until here, I offer you a bonus: a picture of one of the most stellar beauty I ever saw gracing the silver screen, Ludmilla Pitoëff, whose this is the only notable part in cinema, as she was devoted to theater and to her husband, a famous stage director.

Note à benêt, beaucoup, beaucoup plus tard… Plus je vois Ludmilla Pitoëff sur les écrans —elle n'a pas beaucoup tourné, mais au moins, j'ai Le Comédien, où elle joue la Duse, et Le Puritain sous les yeux— plus je me dis que cette incroyablement belle actrice qui joue la fille de Mollenard n'est pas Ludmilla Pitoëff, contrairement à ce qu'indiquent les génériques sur fr.wikipedia ou IMDb. Je vais zyeuter Abus de confiance pour une vérification… Bon, ce n'est pas non plus Svetlana Pitoëff. Le générique du film nous la nomme Élisabeth Pitoëff, il nous faudra donc bien admettre que c'est Élisabeth Pitoëff et puis c'est tout.

Peu après ce "beaucoup plus tard" : confirmation dans le livre Robert Siodmak : le maître du film noir d'Hervé Dumont, qui nous dit ceci : « Les enfants Mollenard sont campés par Robert Lynen (…) et Elisabeth Pitoëff, la fille de Georges et Ludmilla. » On y apprend aussi que tous les extérieurs "maritimes" ont tous été tournés dans le port de Dunkerque, dont un des bassins sera transformé en "port de Shanghai", le tout en septembre et octobre 1937. Les intérieurs sont ensuite tournés aux studios de Joinville, à partir de novembre. Le film sort à Paris fin janvier 1938, « affublé d'un sous-titre accrocheur, "Capitaine corsaire". » Tout ça peut se lire en glougue-bouk.

 Dont'be so shy, you could add, at least, 4 pictures of interesting cars eventhough they are far and small...
First thumb... interesting Dunkirk picture, as those streets and places doesn't exist anymore in that state nowadays ==> at least 3 or 4 vehicles identifiables ... Renault NN, Renault Vivasix, etc...

Thumb no.3 ... a Renault Primaquatre Cabrio
Thumb no.4&5 ...Peugeot 302 Cabrio
