Quote Hungary's Classic Zhiguli Club (Veterán Zsiguli Egyesület - www.veteranzsiguli.hu) organized a photo shooting at the former area of Csepel Industries in Budapest for an article written by Zsolt Csikós for totalcar.hu.

Few external, most notable differences, this very interesting reportage is pointing out:

- "Zhiguli" badge with silver background used in 1972 and 1973.
- "Zhiguli" badge with black background used till late 1976 (since 1974 judging by the cars they have in this club).
- "Lada 1500" badge used since late 1976
- early cars had a bit different - thicker - overriders (till 1974)
- exhaust pipe with square end used in the years 1972-1977 (only type at this time)
- round end of exhaust pipe used since 1977 (together with square one)
- early cars had or chromed C-pillar vent and with inner part painted black or all chromed one till early 1976.
- all black C-pillar vent used since 1976 (in program they say late 1976, but in fact it was since second quarter of that year - maybe mistake in translation)

There are also few things worth to re-think. They say the two wide intakes below the main grille were used since 1975, when denisoviets claims since 1974: http://denisovets.narod.ru/vaz/vazpages/vaz2103.html Athough Hungarians show the white 1974 car, which still has the old "face", so they are perhaps right, that new intakes were to meet since 1975.
Also it is interesting, that the cars were badged in COMECON as Zhiguli still till late 1976, when there was indeed change in the naming earlier - around 1975.
Similar changes like the C-pillar vents undergo in the same time hood vents, below the windshield.

Edit: I did corrections in "our" cars acc. to this. 1975 cars (from the COMECON export markets) I left as Ladas, despite they still had to have the rear Zhiguli badge. Pre-1975 are Zhigulis still.

Watching from here, by far the most interesting Lada of them all; was rare then and, of course, even more so now.

The C pillar vents turned to black sometime in 1976. What we can validate is this based on the cars we have in Hungary. We can see it on cars at the second part of the year, but it could be the timing between sales and production. As keeping the FIFO was a not a strong point in VAZ it was very common that they changed something, then they found old parts in the store and they used up in a later batch. from time to time we find cars with the same service number and still different options. However the claim of denisoviets about the change of the front intakes is not valid. I know two 2103s, one of them is my own which clearly has the production date of 1975 (not only sales date) and has the small intakes. The other one is a famous car in Serbia with only 300 km in. These very early 1975 cars have all the marks the 1974 cars have, except the stamped production date. But the change happened very early in 1975 as 2103 went for sale in Hungary by end of February that year, and all of those cars had the large intakes and the electric fan.

So you are from the "Veterán Zsiguli" club Nagymacs? We have link to the club's website on our forum. It is very useful source of informations about the VAZes!

The confusion about the C-pillar vent was casued by the a bit different info on the website and in this video, but indeed with parts (especially with such tiny details) the COMECON manufacturers quite often weren't too consistent.
In case of the front wall vents we finally follow the 1975 dating.
