Only captured approx. 15mins at the start (mercedes & chevelle ss are in a race/car-chase, ending with the ss crashing through some fuel pumps)

That was the best part of the film anyway. Which car would win in real life?

If the Chevelle SS was equipped with the 454 engine (450 bhp) the Mercedes wouldn’t
have a chance. The Chevy would eat it for breakfast.

But what about handling and nimbleness? In a straight line, yes, the big Chevy would beat the 3.2 litre Merc but I'm not sure that big old dinosaur could keep up through the corners.

Oh boy, not the "musclecars can't handle" argument again.

Muscle cars are like any other car...some handled well, some didn't, period. Saying all musclecars handled poorly is like saying all sports cars are slow in the quarter mile: It's just not true.

By the 1970s, most manufacturers were gaining an interest in cornering and braking, and most of the 1970s vintage models were capable of over .8 g's on a lateral skidpad. 1970s Chevelles were actually some of the best of the larger models.

Handling numbers are purely academic, however. On the street, such data doesn't matter. If you've got the power and the means to keep it under control, you could keep pace with even something like a BMW M3, let alone a lower performing car like a CLK 230. This is why I've always fancied that a muscle car would be the ideal vehicle for a car chase.
