40 minute report broadcast in September 1954 for a BBC "About Britain" series, which if it's the same series is listed by imdb as 1972–1987. BBC Alba revived it for broadcast on 31 Dec 2012 with a new short intro, and it's just been shown again with a short window to see it on iPlayer - seems 6 days left before it disappears again, so be quick. Some more info.

Presented by Richard Dimbleby

.... and underneath the fairly standard 1950s tone, there's a perceptive and fascinating snapshot of an island economy in severe post-war decline (post-war depopulation, only just beginning to get electricity and a road network, too remote for much tourism in those days). The first drive-on car ferry to Kyleakin had just opened, but the main access was still the daily ferry to Portree.

Unexpected moment - Dimbleby goes to Dunvegan Castle and meets Dame Flora MacLeod of MacLeod

the 28th Clan Chief of MacLeod. She was born in 10 Downing Street in 1878, the home of her grandfather Sir Stafford Northcote, who was then Chancellor of the Exchequer.

All my timings include the 2012 intro, which adds about 2 mins 10 seconds to the 1954 running time.
