As President he is said to have had all General Motors products removed from the White House motor pool after GM dealers refused to loan cars for his staff to use during a post-election vacation to Key West. Truman is also said to have kept his cars spotlessly clean. The Truman Home in Independence displays the last car he owned, a 1972 Chrysler Newport Royal, license number 5745. (May 7, 1945 is the day Germany agreed to surrender.) The Truman Presidental Library also has cars that Truman used.
