Life in Britain back then really was like the Ladybird books.

Probably marginally different than America or Japan in the same time period.

I was 11 years old and attending the grammar school in the nearest town, having taken the entrance examination (the 11 plus for those who recall it) a year early and passing despite the handicap of 1 year less to learn things. There didn't seem to be many Ladybird comparisons in my life, the most frequently encountered red object being the bus to school, generally a BMMO S6.
