 Is this really based on the book "1984"? Because the book takes place in the future and all we see in this 1984 movie are World War II cars.

 Purzel, the world got stuck at WW2 levels , you see flashes of WW2 style propeller bombers...

In the story, nuclear war occurred in the 1950s and devastated the world, so most technological development stagnated at those levels.
