Filmed in the UK.

Quote The Czechoslovakia scenes were filmed in and around Glasgow, Scotland, which producer Jonathan Powell says "was a very rough, poverty-stricken place" in 1979.

Excellent TV series which I really enjoyed when it first appeared, but it was perhaps too complicated to understand properly all the subtle plot twists and logic. Or I'm not clever enough. The 2011 film is much simpler but does keep most of the main themes in a more coherent progress and loses some of the red herrings. And when I rewatched the TV series for this entry, I found I understood it a lot better because I'd seen the film. But the TV series is still well worth the effort.

imdb only gives UK locations (London, Glasgow, Oxford) but I guess there was some actual central Europe filming in ep1 alongside Glasgow pretending to be foreign, and early ep2 has some "Portugese" sequences which do look as if genuine Portugal - difficult to see how they could be UK.

The ep1 checkpoint - despite the SNP sign I do not think it's Scotland:

- anyone able to explain 29.8.1944??

Various 1* cars in ep1 - never shown properly, but are recognisable:

11-46 black Fiat 128 coupe at border checkpoint:

and then reappears in the town:

12-22 - Opel KAD (A) at border checkpoint:
[Image: 12-22simca.jpg] [Image: 12-45caravan.jpg]

12-49 - Volvo truck at checkpoint
[Image: 12-49volvo.jpg]

22-53 - military van in "Czechoslovakia" but could easily be a VW LT in a Scottish forest:
[Image: 22-53van.jpg] [Image: 22-53vanb.jpg]

23-43 - an apparently random 504 Estate passing by in a London street:
[Image: p504est23-43.jpg] [Image: p504est23-44.jpg]

but reappears in Lacon's driveway after 43-12, so is probably a crew car

The caravan with kid inside is Niewiadów.
IMO Simca, Golf and Commer are worth own pages...

Can anyone work this one out? Ep6 - 32-34 Smiley walks past a black car at night, with one of his minders pretending to fix the engine while watching for pursuers (so it could be 2*). First thought was FX4 taxi, but it does not seem to have the display at front of roof, and the bonnet when open does not include the radiator grille. So what is it? If after all FX4, I'll add it to another FX4 page which is waiting in the queue.

Well, the times may change. Then there will be similar locations, but on the signs will be written "18.9.2014" ;)

Due the several COMECON-cars on this pic, plus the Volvo-truck, which was a very popular model in Eastern Block countries back then, also due the architecture, I think, this pic may be from Eastern Europe.

The border crossing has a Mobil station /vehicle.php?id=261473 so I suppose it must be somewhere on the Austria-(Czecho-)Slovakia border...

Dover can be added to the location list - these are all film sequences, not stock footage.

No relevant entries from ep7.

Completed. Pictures replaced, details added, several new entries. Difficult series as there are relatively few 2+* cars, but millions of 1* possibles to filter out and decide whether or not to capture.. Ep1 is fairly car heavy, but some other eps have virtually nothing worth capturing.

I would add Portugal (Lisbon?) and Dover as definites to imdb's list of locations, and possibly somewhere like Austria/Czechoslovakia border (but it is unclear if the various scenes in ep1 area are simply a mix of cleverly faked Glasgow and stock footage or also include genuine footage from that area).

 Somewhere we already had discussed the topic "Saab in Czechoslovakia". IIRC there was a remarkable export via the state-owned TUZEX-company.

Jowett Javelin? Austin Devon? Looks 40s with the door frames, plus an alligator bonnet. Weird age of car for a spy to use in 1979 anyway.

Jowett Javelin by the details I can see. (On IPlayer currently.)

Six-light saloon with no quarter-lite glasses and fast-back rear also missing a mascot on a short bonnet.

Agree. Still think it's a strange car for the Circus to have in their fleet but here we are.

I’ve spotted a great blooper. In the last episode, when the Russian go-between is bundled onto the back of a transit van, presumably to be sent back to Russia to be “de-briefed”, as the Van accelerates out of frame the sound track is of a Minor 1000.
