 Eh bien, celui-là, je ne regrette pas de l'avoir revu… putain, pour la première fois revu 36 ans après sa sortie, la vache… Ah ben voui, le temps passe…

John Huston, à 73 ans, montrait encore ce qu'il savait mettre dans une histoire, nom de Dieu !

Picaresque dans sa première partie — et la musique pas finaude de Alex North le souligne un peu trop fort un peu trop souvent — le film vire à la tragédie à la fin. Le héros, tel Don Quichotte, semble le seul être désintéressé de l'histoire.

Et c'est le film d'une vie pour Brad Dourif (Hazel Motes).

Harry Dean Stanton (Asa Hawks) et Amy Wright (Sabbath Lily Hawks) soutiennent quand ils sont là les efforts de Brad. Ils sont ce que Hazel refuse — quoiqu'il ne crache pas sur un petit coup de temps en temps (la scène d'arrivée en ville est bonnement incroyable de simplicité dans la surprise).

Traînant un peu trop tout ce que les écoles de théâtre américaines ont laissé comme scories derrière elles, Dan Shor (Enoch Emory le simplet). Je ne sais pas s'il s'est sorti de ce genre de jeu. Enfin, il n'en fait pas trop, tout de même. Splendide Mary Nell Santacroce (la logeuse), et visqueux et vindicatif Ned Beatty (Hoover Shoates). Son prêcheur de paille, William Hickey, expiera par où il a péché.

Bon sang, quel film !

I said about Hammett bitter things on re-visiting something one had loved the first time. I would say the exact contrary today, after this first re-watch of this late John Huston's opus, thirty-six years after I saw it when it had its French release.

What a movie, gosh, what a movie! Even better to be seen in maturity, really. If you have not, go to it.

Many exteriors, with many cars quite often, downtown Macon, Georgia, and in the countryside around.

Un dernier truc : je n'ai pas lu le roman de Flannery O'Connor dont est tiré le scénario du film. Je ne saurais donc dire si et en quoi Huston a pu le trahir.

... M'avait l'air d'être quelqu'un, cette Flannery O'Connor. Voici ce que je pique dans la page en.wiki qui lui est consacrée. À propos de sa vie, en discutant avec une amie, elle dit : "When I was six I had a chicken that walked backward and was in the Pathé News. I was in it too with the chicken. I was just there to assist the chicken but it was the high point in my life. Everything since has been an anticlimax."

Bon, il ne me reste plus qu'à acheter ses œuvres complètes publiées chez Gallimard. À moins que la maison de la rue Sébastien Bottin, voyant la publicité que je lui fais, ne m'adresse le volume gratuitement.
