This film was about the crimes of armed robber, kidnapper and murderer, Donald Neilson who was responsible for several robberies on local post offices throughout Northern England between 1972 and 1974 and the murders of three sub postmasters who were shot during robberies he committed between the 15th February and the 11th November 1974 as well as the kidnapping and murder of Whittle's Coaches heiress; Lesley Whittle who was abducted by Neilson on the night of the 14th January 1975.

The crimes Neilson committed earnt him the nickname, The Black Panther as one of the victims said that he "moved like a panther at night".

Neilson's victims were:

Donald Skepper - Postmaster at the Harrogate Sub Post Office at New Park, shot during the robbery at the New Park Sub Post Office in Harrogate, North Yorkshire on the night of the 15th February 1974.

Derek Astin - Postmaster at the Baxenden Sub Post Office, shot during the robbery at the Higher Baxenden Sub Post Office, North Lancashire on the night of the 6th September 1974.

Sidney Grayland - Husband of the Postmistress; Margaret at the Langley Sub Post Office, shot during the robbery at Langley, West Midlands on the night of the 11th November 1974.

Gray's wife and Postmistress; Margaret Grayland was also bashed in the robbery, £820 was taken in the robbery.

Lesley Whittle - Heiress and daughter of Whittle's Coaches founder; George Whittle, abducted from her home in Highley, Shropshire on the night of the 14th January 1975.

Neilson left a ransom demand of £50,000 written on Dymotape in a box of Turkish Delights in the loungeroom of the Whittles home.

Gerald Smith - Security guard, shot six times in the back after disturbing Neilson at the Dudley Freightliner Terminal in Dudley, West Midlands on the night of the 16th January 1975.

The investigation revealed that after kidnapping Lesley Whittle, Neilson was looking for locations for the ransom drop and decided to use the Freightliner Terminal as the location, but Smith stumbled onto Neilson and was shot by Neilson, leading Neilson to use Bathpool Park as the alternative location for the ransom drop.
