Although definitely a drama movie involving an unfaithful doctor's wife, there is an element of public information about the dangers of a smallpox outbreak and the need for immunisation. Therefore a lot of support from Civil Defence, Police and Ambulance units and probably their use as extras in filming.

We all had the smallpox vaccination in about 1962/3, the time of this film. I had a Saturday job at the local butcher’s and the lady who worked there remarked that the vaccination, which involved breaking the skin and rubbing something over it, was just like scoring pork!

Yes, no actual hypodermic syringe was involved but they showed a simple jab or scratching the skin with some sort of needle then rubbing some sort of a pad over it and instructions to keep it covered for three days with a plaster. Although I doubt your vaccination was done by Claire Bloom.

I read in a review of the movie (on imdb.com I guess) that the inoculation in the movie was a goof since the smallpox vaccination was permanent as a one-off preventative measure and anybody who was vaccinated in the past was OK.

However reading about it, in the case of an epidemic, mass vaccination was used by local authorities as a form of epidemic control, despite anyone thinking they could already be immune.

In fact, joking apart, I can't recall my vaccination, except to say that it does seem that I had one at some point. I was about 14 at that time, and clearly recall the sort of low key panic, but being well out in the sticks in a small village community, we maybe didn't get so badly affected. What I do recall was the pattern of scarring on my mum's upper arm caused by her earlier vaccination against smallpox.

I can certainly say it engendered none of the concerns that the current pandemic has.
