Not sure if they were common, but definitely seen as desirable. Japanese car production was much lower then and mainly small economy things with very simple mechanics and basic factories, and there was very little coming in from elsewhere such as Europe. So big flashy US landyachts were the aspirational dream. Japanese government started a programme to kickstart a modern local car industry by organising assembly collaborations - Hino-Renault, Isuzu-Hillman, Nissan-Austin, Mitsubishi-Jeep - which by late 1950s became the foundation of their global success 1960s onwards. |
