Set in 1944, so a couple of years after the 1970s series/film in 1941-42. "Walmington-on-Sea" supposed to be south coast Kent, but filmed in Yorkshire - Bridlington area, Bempton (for the chalky white cliffs), North York Moors Railway, Scarborough, Leeds.

Respectful remake of 1970s classic, mildly funny moments and a few strands link to the original - the same actor plays the vicar, Ian Lavender (Pike) reapears in a different role, same Ford BB truck reappears. Not a remake disaster, but I doubt if anyone would watch it more than once.

 I think you are damning this film with faint praise. I enjoyed it and would be quite happy to sit through it again.

It wouldn’t do if we were all the same would it?

Possibly my enjoyment of the film stems from the performance of Toby Jones as Mainwaring. He came to my notice playing Nello in “Marvellous” which I would recommend to anyone, partly because of its Staffordshire setting, and partly because of Jones’s skill in portraying a person with learning difficulties. What’s more, I don’t even support Stoke City!

 Never laughed once at new film , pleasant enough though and OK for the scenery. Would not watch it again .

Been watching the early black and white TV episodes on the 'live' box , beautifully acted and very funnily scripted .

Not seen Marvellous, but will now keep an eye open for it. Toby J was also excellent in Detectorists - a subtle slow-burner with very few classic LOL moments but definitely worth watching.
