 Fourth Jacques Becker's feature film, after Dernier atout, Goupi mains rouges and Falbalas, and before the sublime Rendez-vous de juillet and Édouard et Caroline (coming soon on IMCDb),

is again a change of mood and set-up. No more peasants lost in the country side, neither fancy location and upper-class characters, but proles, living through hard times and post-war restrictions. But in love and trusting each other.

And in the big picture as in details, this movie is an absolute treat.

The villain is Noël Roquevert, enriched during war and keeping on black market habits and other bad behaviours, like buying young love,

« T'es ma femme à moi, j'veux pas qu'tu t'laisses regarder par les autres… I'z'ont pas mauvais goût, i' faut dire. »

Superbe film, vraiment, où rien n'est laissé au hasard et où tout porte une signification, un trait d'humour, une notation sur l'époque et les personnages. Et la musique de Jean-Jacques Grunenwald est bellement illustrative.

Comme tous les grands auteurs, Becker cultive la direction d'acteur et d'abord le choix desdits, ce qui fait qu'on trouve ici des gens qui feront parler d'eux plus tard, parfois bientôt, ou encore de ces indispensables seconds rôles qui tiennent si bien leurs bouts de scènes.
