This film was based on the exploits of the war homing pigeons whose jobs were delivering vital messages from Nazi-Occupied Europe, reporting vital information from the Nazi frontlines to the Allied High Command during World War II. The main character; Valiant was based on the exploits of Gustav (callsign NPS.42.31066); an homing pigeon with the Royal Air Force Pigeon Service who flew 150 miles to reported the news of the Normandy Landings to his handler; Sergeant Harry Halsey at RAF Thorney Island, West Sussex on the afternoon of the 6th June 1944; the day of the Normandy Landings. Gustav's message was the first news of the Normandy Landings to reach the British Mainland, this message was followed by the message delivered by the Irish Homing War Pigeon; Paddy (callsign NPS.43.9451) who flew 230 miles to his handler; Captain Andrew Hughes at RAF Hurn, Dorset, reporting the Normandy Landings as successful, later that same day. -- Last edit: 2021-06-13 14:22:46 |
