The show is set in and around Kansas City, Missouri. The main characters live in Mission Hills, Kansas. Kansas is a back/rear plate only state, and Missouri is a two plate state. I noticed that the Kansas license plates on the cars are the 2010 "America's Heartland/Windmill" base, instead of the 2008 "Ad Aspera/State Seal" base. The "America's Heartland" base is used only for personalized/vanity plates, and the "Ad Aspera" base is used for standard issue plates.

As you can see in this vidcap/image from Ep. 1.05, the car has an "America's Heartland" plate with six random letters and numbers. It looks as if the prop department thought the "America's Heartland" base is the standard issue base in Kansas.

In addition, the "SN" in the top left corner is the county code. "SN" indicates the vehicle is registered in Shawnee County, Kansas. However, Mission Hills is located in Johnson County, Kansas. The county code on the license plate should be "JO."

[EDIT 7/28/11] In this image from Ep. 1.08, you can see several goofs.

First, as I mentioned above, Kansas is a back plate only state. This car shouldn't have a front plate. Second, it has the same "America's Heartland" plate goof I mentioned above. Third, the "4" on the plate is "open," and doesn't connect at the top. This type of "4" is seen on current California and Illinois plates, but not on Kansas plates (as you can see on the 034ADQ plate above). In addition, this front plate doesn't have a county sticker or expiration sticker like the plates pictured above. California, for example, requires two plates but only the rear plate bears expiration stickers.

Excellent analysis of the license plates. I notice in some films that a lot of cars have very specific state plates, based on the design, but the actual state name does not appear. As I pointed out with the Chevelle in Transformers 3D: The car clearly has a current-style Florida plate, but the actual state name was removed.

None of the pics from 1.01 show it well, but in the pilot all the cars had CA plates genericized by replacing "California" with "Drive safely" in a similar scribble-ish font.

Yoda, I also saw that and made a note of it here: /vehicle_404801-BMW-135i-Cabriolet-E88.html

^ Looks like two early 80's Pontiac Firebird Turbo Trans Am and a VW Karmann-Ghia Typ 14.

ep 1.24 has a few scenes in a junkyard with interesting old cars, but not many are well visible except these:

3 Jag XJ Series 2s, but the little white thing looks more interesting - any idea what it is?

That looks like a New Jersey Transit passenger car in the background, with a caboose. I never knew NJT to use cabooses.

BTW, I just submitted this link to IMDb.

Looks likely - the strange creations we have lurking in dusty corners of our collection. Rare enough for a page?

ep 1.30, Taurus & Mini, I put them here to regroup later if less-background ones are seen in the next season:
