dsl ◊ 2016-03-23 01:50	Taken from If War Should Come - vol 3 (1939-41) of 3 BFI compilation DVD sets of shorts from The GPO Film Unit. Superb 23 minute film about an RAF squadron which had no aeroplanes and whose crew never left the ground. Instead it was part of the RAF's Balloon Barrage whose commanding officer asked the GPO unit to make a film publicising the role of his department. First section is establishing and training the squadron at an un-named airfield in Englandshire, then its deployment in a huge convoy of "50 trucks" to Scotland to protect the Forth bridge after the first air attack over Britain on 16 October 1939 above the Firth of Forth, which caught everyone by surprise. Very well made with lots of excellent film-making technique, photography and unusual subject to explore. Was apparently remade for US cinema screenings as "Flying Elephants". Wonderfully strange early training footage Forth bridge and old ferry Edinburgh tram at sunrise Train on Forth Bridge - looks streamlined engine and has 4 letters on tender which might say LNER - could it be one of the Mallard family streamliners?? Man ordering two takeaway Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Lattes from the cafe for the long journey north

Pub quiz trivia - the next day - 17 October there was a bombing raid on the Scapa Flow naval base in Orkney. The planes were seen off without causing major damage, so one dropped its bombs on an isolated cluster of cottages at the Stenness road junction. One of these cottages was the infamous Golden Slipper nightclub and one bloke inside was killed, becoming the first British civilian casualty of WW2. -- Last edit: 2016-03-23 05:38:50

dsl ◊ 2016-03-23 16:35	^ As I was watching it, I did wonder how at that very early stage of the war, a UK film unit would have (a) access to good footage of enemy aircraft and (b) be able to create reconstruction footage of the original incident on 16 Oct 1939 with a genuine German thing. So the answer is ..... creative splicing! For impdb, it may be worth you visiting the youtube copy and picking out other captures in the sequence as well.
