This documentary is about so called Paco-Paco trucks that are widely used in the North-West of Brazil. After the gold-rush was over in those parts of the world many ex-goldminers became farmers and needed cheap but reliable transport. At the same time many pump engines, one, two or three cylinder diesel engines, that had been used for washing the gold, were readily available. A car mechanic named Jair Graff was the first in 1990 to put such an engine onto an old chassis, often Willys or Ford, add bits and pieces he got from the junkyard and had a simple but very robust small truck for the local farmers. By the time of filming in 2004 he had produced more than 460 vehicles of his own design. Quite a few others copied the idea and by now some thousand Paco-Pacos exist.

The name 'Paco-Paco' comes from the sound the engine makes. Sometimes they are also called 'Jerico' (donkey) or 'Batacao' (hope I spelled that right).

I'll list these vehicles as 'Custom Made', as even the trucks made by Jair Graff, the best on the market, differ from one vehicle to the next.

The local military police commander tries to ban the Paco-Pacos from the roads of Peixoto de Azevedo, the town where this documentary was filmed. He was new in town and thought that those loud and unregistered trucks, many without lights or even brakes, should not drive in town, and therefore confiscated some Paco-Pacos.

The owners and producers didn't think much of that and staged a Paco-Paco race to show their strenght:

This is the kind of pump-engine used for the Paco-Pacos:

After adding parts from Ford, Willys and Chevrolet it is ready for a new life in a Paco-Paco:

Only for the truck that was made during the filming of this documentary I can tell that a two cylinder Yanmar engine was used ... an old one, of course!

... and after three days in Jair Graff's workshop:

All the other Paco-Pacos also have one, two or three cylinder pump engines. Yanmar engines are certainly common, but there were other makes, too, that sold pump engines during the gold rush.

Hallo
Alexander
I am wery happy, that i find the pictures you gived her. I do colect homemade tractors as machines and also information about such machines. In my museum is already 15 homemade tractors. This Brasilian machines atre more trucks or lorys than tractors , but they have the same problem with police as I and my friends hawe in our country.
By searching homemade tractors in diferent countries on the web - is easy to find them im ALL european countries / specially Poland, Hungayry, Rusia , Germany or our Czech country. Many of them are also in USA as old machines from history. But in other countries are of course this homemade machines too, but I dont know how people call such homemade tractors - sure - there are maybee more such machines than in Europa, but the people there hawe other problems to do, than to take photos or to write about his machines on the internet.

Only because this film and Your activity Alexander - I did find thus nice machines, story and nice people of Brazil.
I was before years also working in film company and to do such film as you describe is my dream !!

PLEASE - Is it possible to BUY this film on DVD or VIDEO ????? I will pay with pleasure to get this document film more money than for some American hollywood shit film.

Thank you wery much
